Sleeping Before Tahajjud

Shaykh is sleeping before Tahajjud mandatory? i cannot sleep due to having insomnia and night shifts. but i still want to pray Tahajjud and ask to Allah. Will my dua still be accepted if i dont sleep and pray Tahajjud the way it would be if i slept?
