Sin or reward?

Sheikh, in my home I often play Qur’an recitations on my phone so that they continue to be heard throughout the house. At times, however, we become occupied with our work and are unable to listen, while the recitation carries on. Our intention is simply to invite blessings into the home. Would it be considered sinful if no one is actively listening due to being busy, even though the recitation continues?

When someone is personally reciting, those present should show greater attentiveness and avoid speaking over them, especially when the recitation is intended for everyone to hear. Allah says: "When the Qur'an is recited, listen to it attentively and remain silent, so that you may receive mercy." (Sūrat al-Aʿrāf 7:204) Regarding a recording, some scholars explain that it is not identical to a person presently reciting. The device is simply replaying a previously recorded voice. Therefore, the listener is not sinful for cooking, cleaning, working, or becoming distracted while it continues. Other scholars apply the general etiquette of the verse to recordings as well. Although attentive listening may not always be obligatory, the Qur'an should still be treated respectfully. Therefore, there is no sin, in sha' Allah, if you play Qur'an throughout your home and then become occupied with permissible work. Nevertheless, listen and reflect whenever reasonably possible. If everyone is talking loudly or nobody is paying attention, it would be more respectful to pause it. It should also not be played in inappropriate places, such as bathrooms. Your intention of bringing blessings into the home is good. However, the greatest blessing comes not simply from having a recording playing, but from personally reciting the Qur'an, listening attentively, understanding it, and living by it. So, you are not sinful for becoming busy while a recording continues. Just combine your good intention with proper respect for the words of Allah. And Allah knows best.
