Parents changing their opinions on marriage.
Hello Sheikh, I have been talking to this girl for the past 3 years with both of our parents knowledge and we have developed an extremely strong bond overtime. Due to circumstances, there have been plenty of delays overtime be it due to family, medical or other reasons which of course can be legitimate. The girl’s family is far more open than mine when it comes to drinking which I believe has been the main factor of concern on both sides. The girl’s for wanting it and mine for not. Long story short, now my parents aren’t happy with what was told by the girl’s parents before finalizing on a possible engagement when it’s topic came up again before traveling over to Europe to “seal the deal”. I know my parents have every right to be offended and displeased with what was said, but 3 years later now both parents don’t want to approach each other. My parents are telling me to cut it off but the girl’s family knows that we are still talking and are aware of each other’s feelings. What do I do here? I love my parents but I truly have no differences between the girl and I despite there being differences between our parents. If we had any flaws, be it on principles or even morality or ethics, we would not proceed with this anymore then. But that’s the thing, we love each other and truly wish to marry. We know the difficulties that lie up ahead with our family differences (mind you, everything else, Islam, country, current location/place of residence, culture are all the same for us, minus the alcohol) and are prepared to face them. I don’t want to disappoint my parents but I love this girl to the point I know for certain that she is the one for me and I for her and I would only marry her if my parents would approve. Otherwise I do not wish to marry anyone else ever.
