Military / Collateral Damage / Accountability
I’m serving in the military in a non-combat role. My job involves managing parts that are used on fighter jets and bombers.Knowing that these aircraft are used in military operations, where bombs can result in civilian casualties and collateral damage, weighs heavily on my conscience. It deeply troubles me that innocent people are being harmed, and I struggle with the fact that my work is connected to that process.My question is about accountability before Allah. On the Day of Judgment, would someone in my position be held accountable in the same way as those who make the decisions to wage war and authorize these operations? Personally, I fear that Allah may not be pleased with my involvement, even though I am not the one making those decisions.At the same time, I have a family to provide for, and I took an oath to serve and defend my country. Because of that, I feel torn between continuing my service and deciding not to re-enlist when my contract ends.I also wonder about indirect involvement. If I were to leave the military and work a civilian job instead, I would still pay taxes, and a portion of those taxes would be used by the government to fund military operations. Doesn't that mean, in some way, that nearly everyone is indirectly connected?I would sincerely appreciate your thoughts and guidance from an Islamic perspective.
