DRAWING IN ISLAM

I've heard some scholars consider drawing living beings impermissible, based on hadiths warning against image-makers. But I've also read others distinguish based on intention and context — for example, if the niyat is skill development rather than bragging, arrogance, or veneration. I have two specific questions, since I understand they might be treated differently: 1. Is it permissible to practice and develop skill in realistic human portrait drawing (pencil sketches), given the intention is purely artistic growth? 2. Does the same ruling apply to stylized/animated 2D characters made for original stories, or is there more room there since they aren't lifelike depictions?
