Doubts regarding whom to follow

Assalamu Alaikum Shaykh, I am from South India, where many cultural traditions are mixed with religion. Sometimes I find it difficult to know which practices are truly from Islam and which are cultural customs. How can an ordinary Muslim distinguish between culture and authentic Islamic teachings? Whom should we follow and what principles should we use to ensure we are following Islam correctly according to the Qur'an and Sunnah?
