Do you abandon your child for not believing?

In Prophet Nuh (AS)’s story, when the divine flood was coming, Allah promised Nuh (AS) that he will save his family except those who didn’t follow him. Later, when it was his son’s turn, he didn’t want to come. He says that the mountains would protect him. Nuh (AS) begs him to come but his son refuses. Then Allah told Nuh (AS) that “he is not of your family” Now I’m not complaining, just want to know, did he have to leave him behind because he did not accept the message? I hope you understand my question and hope you give me your best explanation like you always do, sheikh Thank you
