Difference between (فرقة) and (فقه)
I’m trying to understand the terminology more clearly. Could you please explain the difference between “Firqah” (فرقة) and “Fiqh” (فقه)? Also, when the Hadith mentions 73 firqahs, how have scholars understood the term “firqah” in that context? Does it relate to differences in fiqh, differences in aqeedah, or something broader?

Jazakumullahu khiran for the question. We'll keep it simple and clear Insha'Allah. Fiqh (فقه) refers to understanding Islamic rulings and how we practise our religion, such as salah, fasting and marriage etc. Firqah (فرقة) refers to a sect or group that separates itself based on certain beliefs or fundamental principles. Regarding the Hadith about the 73 sects, scholars generally understood it to refer primarily to major differences in Aqeedah and fundamental religious principles, not legitimate differences in Fiqh. Now, here’s something important to understand. In Islam, we have Qat’i (قطعي) matters, which are definitive beliefs and rulings established through clear, conclusive evidence. These are not open to disagreement, such as the obligation of the five daily prayers or the prohibition of alcohol. Then we have Dhanni (ظني) matters, where the evidence or its interpretation is not definitive. Here, qualified scholars can legitimately differ based on their understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah. This is why the four Sunni madhhabs can differ in Fiqh while remaining united upon the fundamentals of Islam. Remember, not every difference is division, and not every disagreement is deviation! The Hadith is a warning against abandoning the fundamentals of our Deen, not an invitation to label every Muslim who disagrees with us as misguided. Allah knows best!
