A question about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is sunnah and his hair

Hi, I have a question I’d like to ask you. I’ve been thinking about growing my hair long because I’ve heard that it is Sunnah and that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sometimes wore his hair long. However, when I asked my mother about it, she told me that at one point Christians also wore their hair long, and because of that, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) cut his hair. So I wanted to ask you, sir: Is this actually true? Was growing long hair really a Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and would it be permissible for me to grow my hair long?
